"Following Jesus"
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22
Rev. John Donaldson
The State Funeral for former President James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr. was held last Thursday, January 9. Carter, a controversial President, was perhaps the most influential Ex-President in our history. He and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, were especially remembered for their support of Habitat for Humanity, helping to build or renovate over 4,000 homes. Jimmy Carter was a thoughtful person, and while many may disagree with policies, he was clearly a man of great character. Here is one of his quotes I especially like:
“I believe that anyone can be successful in life, regardless of natural talent or the environment within which we live. This is not based on measuring success by human competitiveness for wealth, possessions, influence, and fame, but adhering to God’s standards of truth, justice, humility, service, compassion, forgiveness, and love.”
Our scripture this Sunday is from Luke 3, on the preaching of John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus. Clearly for Jesus, his baptism marked the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. But the question is, what does baptism mean to us who are disciples of Jesus?
Join Sunday online or in person as we remember our baptism.
Blessings,
Pastor John

First Quarter Administrative Council Meeting
A great way to stay abreast on happenings at Elberton First Methodist is to attend the Administrative Council Meetings. All are welcome to attend and have the opportunity to speak; only Council members have a vote. The meeting will be in the Fellowship Hall on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at 6:30 p.m.
Wesley Ringers
The Wesley Ringers will begin rehearsals for 2025 on Wednesday, January 29th at 5:30 p.m. in the Bell Choir Room. If you would like more information and/or are interested in joining the Bell Choir, please contact Brenda Cann at brendacannmusic@gmail.com.
Church Announcements
Going forward, we ask that all announcements for the weekly e-blast, The Methodist Message, and the Bulletin be submitted by noon each Wednesday. If announcements are submitted past this time, we cannot guarantee they will be published that week.
Prayer Team
Do you believe that God answers prayers? Do you feel called to pray for other people? The pastor is organizing a prayer team to meet monthly, with time and day to still be determined. If you would like to be part of the EFMC prayer team, please contact John at 706- 421-6339.
Evening Service
Guess who's coming to dinner.
In the Methodist Church, it's been a long-running joke that no one really has to say that there will be food at a church function - it’s just a given. Then we hold friendly competitions to see which table gets to go first. Afterward, instead of indigestion, we find that our hearts are strangely warmed. All that is fine and dandy, and all in good fun. But have you sent your RSVP to the Banquet?
In the Chapel, 6pm Sunday... looking forward to seeing you then!
