“The Divine Invitation”
Isaiah 55:1-3, 6-11, NIV
Rev. John Donaldson
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
(Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV)
Did you know the gospel was also in the Old Testament? Isaiah 53 and 55 are among the greatest chapters of the Bible and are sometimes called the Gospel of Isaiah. Isaiah 53 describes what can only be the suffering of Christ, and Chapter 55 gives God’s amazing, heartfelt, urgent invitation to find life in Christ. “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat!” (Isaiah 55:1). Join us this Sunday as we seek to open and understand God’s invitation.
Blessings,
Pastor John

Most of us will never visit Egypt in person, but there is a way we can visit this ancient land of pyramids and pharaohs without getting airline tickets, passports, or vaccinations. How? We can see the land through a four-week video series, “God Heard Their Cry.” Our tour guide is Biblical Archaeologist Ray Vander Laan. These 30-minute lessons take us to Egypt and will open your eyes to the world of Moses and the ancient Israelites. In addition to the study time, we also enjoy singing old hymns, sharing joys and concerns, and praying together. Join us at 6 pm in the chapel; space is limited to around 20, so be there on time to get your seat!

During the month of August, at the 11 am worship service, congregants will have a chance to call out their favorite hymns during the middle hymn time! Go ahead and pick out your favorite hymn so you are ready! You can find hymns and their page number using this link: Our Great Redeemer's Praise

Our Prayer Team meets on the first Sunday of each month at 10:15 a.m. in the Chapel. The next date for this is Sunday, August 2. During this time, we lift up those on the prayer list and others who would like to receive prayer. Please stop by the Chapel during this time if you would like to receive prayer or have someone to pray for.

The 6th - 12th-grade youth are invited to meet upstairs on Sundays at 10 am for Fellowship and Bible Study. We are starting this fall with a study of the most basic instructions of God, the Ten Commandments. These instructions are God’s way for us to find happiness in life. All youth are welcome; there is a good bit of time for discussion, along with donut holes from Dunkin!

This Monday, August 3, from 12-5 pm, the Red Cross will be back at EFMC for the fall Blood Drive. According to the Red Cross, “One donation may help save up to three lives.” Some of you have saved whole villages! You can schedule an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org or contact Autumn Wright. Thank you in advance for being willing to help.

Have you missed eating supper with your church family? The good news is that when kids are back in school, the Fellowship Meals are back! On Wednesday, August 5th, at 5:30 pm, we will have our First Wednesday Fellowship Meal. The August menu is spaghetti with meatballs, salad, garlic bread, and cake for dessert. Please note that the cost has changed slightly. It is still free for children 3 and under, still $5 for children 10 and under, and still $10 for Adults, but we now have a new “Family Rate”, just $25 to cover the whole household. We hope to encourage our church family to come and enjoy food and fellowship together!

After a summer break, the Thursday Night Bible Study is back this week! This year we will be studying the book of Acts. This is Luke’s sequel to his Gospel. John Wesley called it “the Acts of the Holy Spirit”, as this book emphasizes the Holy Spirit's empowerment and ongoing direction of believers in the early church. The class is at 6 p.m. Thursday nights, lasts about an hour, and is open to all (male, female, young and old). Join us in person at the Office Conference Room, or online via Zoom

We want to hear what God is doing in our church family! If you have a praise report and would like to share, send it to the church office using the email office@elbertonfmc.com. Your praises could encourage someone else!
