"How did Jesus fulfil the law?"
Matthew 5:17-20, NIV
Rev. John Donaldson
Jesus longest recorded sermon is called The Sermon on the Mount, found in Mathew chapters 5-7. Early in chapter 5, Jesus gives an interesting mission statement. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17, NIV) How is it that Jesus “fulfilled” the law, and what does this mean to us? Join us this Sunday as we continue to seek to know Jesus better.
Blessings,
Pastor John

News & Announcements
Stepping Stones Update
Last week, the class finished up their study on the book Screwtape Letters, by C.S. Lewis. When they meet again, they will be going on to another popular and influential book by Lewis, Mere Christianity. (It is not “mere” in the sense of something unimportant, rather this “mere” means the basic, core understanding of Christianity.) Due to travel commitments by their leader, the class will take a break until May or June. In the meantime, members of the group are invited to attend the Young Adult Connect Group, led by Bryce Keely, or the combined Crosstalk/Mary Freeman Class.
Brenda Cann Retirement
After 28 years of dedicated and faithful service, Brenda Cann is retiring as our Chancel Choir Director. She has been a tremendous asset to our staff, and her shoes will be hard to fill. Brenda plans to continue singing with the choir and serving the church in other areas. When you see her, “Thank Her” for a job well done!!
A Message from HOPE
HOPE Ministries is a non-profit organization that Elberton First Methodist supports to help overcome poverty in our community. Last week, we received this Thank You message:
To learn more about HOPE, visit their website at www.elberthope.org.
If you would like to donate to HOPE, you can mark your offering for “HOPE Ministries.”
EC Food Ministry
The next food distribution will be on Saturday, March 21, beginning at 6 a.m. at Concord UMC. The truck delivery will be on Wednesday, March 18, at 10 a.m., and the food packing will be on Thursday, March 19, at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed during those times, and we encourage you to help out.
The collection for March & April is canned potatoes. Please drop off items in the church office, the Crossroads Connection Center, or the Sanctuary entrances.
Needed for Decorations
We are needing green bud vases for the table decorations in the Fellowship Hall. If you have some, please bring them to the church office before March 20.
Easter Egg Hunt Candy
We are in need of candy to stuff the eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt on Palm Sunday. If you would like to donate candy, please place it in the bins in the Crossroads Connection Center and Sanctuary entrances or drop it off in the church office. We will also accept monetary donations to purchase candy. Please designate your offering for “Easter Egg Hunt.”

We will recognize Compassion Sunday on Sunday, March 22, in both services. If you sponsor a child, we would like to highlight their name, home country, and maybe a few sentences about them. Please send this information by March 16 via email to the church office.

This Easter, you are invited to donate an Easter lily in honor of or in memory of a loved one. They are $10 each and will be displayed in the Sanctuary on Easter Sunday as we celebrate the hope and joy of the resurrection. If you would like to donate a Lily, please pick up a card in the Crossroads Connection Center or the Sanctuary entrance. You can also donate on the church website. All donations are due Sunday, March 22.

The annual Health Meets Hope 5K will be on Sunday, March 22, from 3-5 pm. Hosted by Friends of Advantage, this event raises awareness for mental health and IDD. Elberton First will have a booth at the event, giving away sno-cones. If you would be interested in helping with this event, please let the church office know. There is also a need for volunteers in other areas of the event, including setup/breakdown, Dunking booth participants, and route directors for the race to direct the route and hand out water.

Our 30 Pieces of Silver Mission Project this year will go towards Compassion International, a Christian ministry dedicated to releasing children from poverty in Jesus' name.
Bags are located at the Crossroads Connection Center and Sanctuary entrances. Please pick up a bag, place your change in it, and return it to the church on Easter Sunday.

On Palm Sunday, March 29, we will have a combined service in the Sanctuary at 10 a.m., followed by a Fellowship Lunch (the church is providing baked ham; the congregation is asked to bring a side dish), and then the annual Easter Egg Hunt! The Palm Sunday worship service will feature a cantata by our choir. It would be really nice to have more people in our choir for the cantata! If you like to sing and can make joyful noise, please consider joining the choir for the next five weeks at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday nights.
