"A Waiting People"

Pastor John Donaldson

This is the first Sunday of the church season called Advent, a word that comes from the Latin “adventus,” which means “coming.” The four Sundays of Advent anticipate the coming of the Christ – celebrating his birth, his presence in our hearts, and his future return. On the first Sunday of Advent, the focus is on this last part, the return of Christ. Charles Wesley wrote a beautiful Advent hymn in 1744 that starts like this,
“Come, Thou long expected Jesus born to set Thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth Thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.”

Blessings,
Pastor John

News & Announcements

This week is the beginning of the Advent season! Once again, we will be inviting families to take turns lighting the Advent Candles. We are looking for a family at each service, one for the 9 a.m. and one for the 11 a.m. If your family would like to help during Advent, please contact the Pastor at 706-421-6339 to get on the schedule!
Thursday Bible Study
The Pastor’s Bible Study has moved from Tuesday Nights to Thursday nights, the next meeting is December 5, 6 p.m. We are working through the Gospel of Matthew and will be looking at Matthew 7:13-29. The class meets in the Conference Room and participants can join the class in person or via Zoom. For more information, just contact the pastor.
Wednesday night, December 4, we will have a church supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by a special visitor directly from the North Pole (by way of Oxford). Following pictures, there will be a rehearsal at 7 p.m. for all kids participating in the Community Christmas Cantata. The menu for that will be breakfast!
Evening Chapel Service
Praise the Lord with Thanksgiving or give thanks to the Lord with praise. Thanksgiving for Emmanuel? Thanksgiving and Christmas are inextricably linked as they are both the cause of, and caused by, giving gifts and giving and receiving thanks, and giving thanks is a gift.
Matthew 7:7-11, Chapel tonight, 6pm... We thank you for coming to give praise!
Dear EFMC members:
Elberton First Methodist has so much to celebrate this Christmas!! God is leading us to be the best we can be, and we are working hard to do His will.
Our church staff is doing a fantastic job without complaint, and with pride and enthusiasm. In appreciation, SPRC would like to reward our staff with an End of the Year Bonus. If you would like to contribute, just write Staff Christmas in the note section of your check.
Deadline for donations is December 18.
When you see Staff members around the church – Thank them !!!  A lot of work goes on behind the scenes that make things go as smoothly as they do.
In Christ - Staff Pastor Parish Relations Committee
Elberton First Methodist Church is one of the largest White Christmas supporters in our community. Beginning this Sunday, December 1st, we will begin collecting for our annual donation. We will observe White Christmas in both services on Sunday, December 15, 2024. This year, everyone is asked to give Flour, Sugar and Peanut Butter.

As we give thanks for our many blessings and remember that so many families are suffering this year, we ask you to be generous. Please place your donations in one of the boxes (wrapped in Christmas paper) located in the Crossroads Connection Center or in the Sanctuary.

“And the King will reply to them, Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least of these My brethren, you did it for Me.” -Matthew 25:40
Help spread the Christmas cheer and join us next Sunday night, December 8, for Christmas Caroling! We’ll meet at the church office at 4 p.m. and then head out to the neighborhood!
Capital Fund Campaign
In the struggles over the last year, many church projects and needed repairs and improvements were put on hold. It is time to move forward again! Please consider making a special donation to our Capital Fund Campaign (CFC). Funds will be used for long overdue church repairs, planned maintenance and the pay for the balance of the cost for the new playground. As we are able, let’s all participate, so that we are building up the church together! Just mark in the memo section of your check, “CFC.” Thank you all for your generous and sacrificial giving!
There is hardly a better way to teach a child about the concepts of Christianity than through watching and discussing the play, “The Lions, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.” We are pleased that the Elberton Theater is presenting this play in December. A special treat is that the director and some of the actors are members here at EFMC! The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is showing at the Elberton Theater on the weekends of December 6-8, and December13-15.
