"What's A Farmer To Do?"
Luke 12:13-21, NIV
Rev. John Donaldson

This week we are looking at Luke 12:13-21. Jesus, wise teacher that he is, is asked to settle an estate, like a probate officer. Jesus passes. But then passes on this great truth to those who are fighting for more stuff, “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Jesus follows this up with a short parable about a person with an abundant crop who decides that what is needed most is bigger barns to hold it all. Here is how Lon Woodrum, poet/preacher, restates Jesus’ parable.

"Arranging blueprints of big barns to catch the flood of coming corn,
computing stuff stored for the future,
He forgot that time is not stored up like grain - big barns buy no tomorrows.
His soul, required by him who causes grain to grow,
Discerned a question hanging over barns, blueprints and miles of corn:
whose shall these things be?"

Join us Sunday as we look at the question - what should the farmer have done with all that grain?

Blessings,
Pastor John

News & Announcements

Praises!
  • A Great Sunday - Thank you to everyone who worked together for a wonderful Combined Worship Service and Fellowship Lunch. We were blessed with great southern gospel from Al McCall and Mark Wallace, outstanding messages from Ray Allgood (Gideons) and Bob Beckwith (Wesley Foundation), followed by a tasty and very enjoyable time of food and fellowship. Special thanks to Mike McGarity and Pete Higginbotham for the BBQ and slaw, and to all our many great cooks for bringing in food to share, and to Donna Webb for jumping in to wash dishes in the clean up! As the saying goes, “a good time was had by all.”  ?

  • The Joy of Shut Doors - Recently, my mom, Janie Giannoni, joined Jesus I am sure. Following a lengthy settlement of the estate! I had two weeks to vacate the premises. I had tried multiple times to get in government housing, apartments, and other rentals. I did not mind being in a one-bedroom apartment, but I did tell the Lord that the ministry I do tends to involve Outreach to others, usually from the home. Several days before I was to leave, the Lord opened up a home for me to rent. This exceeded my expectations. I knew that all those shut doors were so that God could show Himself strong. I want to thank the church for all the prayers, love, and support.
-Thanks and Glory to God! Britt Wright

Let’s celebrate together! If you have a praise report and you would like to share the good news, email your praise to the church office at office@elbertonfmc.com.
Hymnal & Bible Dedication
Sanctuary Hymnals and Bibles will be dedicated on August 24! Many of these were given in memory or honor of someone, and they will be identified with special stickers on the front panel of the book. To donate a Hymnal ($30) or a Bible ($15), simply make a special donation to the church prior to August 20, noting your name and who the gift is in memory and/or honor of.
Sunday mornings in August, there will be a fellowship time in the sanctuary overflow area from 10:45 to 11 a.m. Coffee, donuts, and something non-sugary will be available!
Thank you to Ray Allgood for Annual Gideon presentation on Sunday, August 10. There are so many amazing stories about people “randomly” picking up a Bible and having their lives changed for the better. We normally take a collection once a year to support the Gideons. If you would like to donate to the Gideons, just write “Gideon’s” in the memo section on your check. In addition, there is a Gideon display in the foyer of the Crossroads Connectional Center and the Sanctuary with further information on how to make a donation in memory or honor of a loved one at any time of the year.
Visitation Road Trip!
Some months ago, Gerald & Audrey Hardin, long-time members of EFMC, moved to a long-term care at the Lakes at Gainesville Assisted Living (2435 Limestone Pkwy, Gainesville). After church this Sunday, 8/17, several of us are going to ride over to visit with them, with of course a stop for lunch on the way. ? We’ll likely be using the little church bus, so plenty of seating for all interested. To join the “visitation road trip,” just meet by the church office at 12:15 p.m. this Sunday. RSVP not required, but would be helpful.

  • Note: With many of the Sunday Evening Chapel group on the road trip, there will be no evening service this week.

Women's Handcraft Group
Molly Martin, Ron’s wife, is interested in starting a women’s craft group, doing crochet, needlepoint, etc. If you are interested, please contact the church office: 706-283-1863.

EC Food Ministry Collection
The Food Ministry is still collecting canned tuna during August. You can drop off items in the Crossroads or Sanctuary entrance or bring them to the church office.
