“Go and Do Likewise”

Luke 10:25-29, NIV

Pastor John Donaldson

Continuing through the gospel of Luke, we come to chapter 10 this week. In 10:25-37 we read one of Jesus’ most loved and influential parables – a parable that has inspired art and music, a parable that has given its name to hospitals and charities, a parable that has even has a legal doctrine named for it (where medical professionals can give aid in emergencies and not be sued). Jesus shares this parable when he is asked the question, “Who is my neighbor?” Join us this week as we study the Good Samaritan parable and mediate on what it means to follow Jesus’ command, “Go, and do likewise.”

Blessings,
Pastor John

“Thank you so much for the kindness and compassion you have shown our family during this difficult time. Your kind expression of sympathy has been a comfort to us.”

Evening Chapel Service - Starts Back August 3rd
The Sunday evening service will be back next week, August 3, at 6 p.m. The evening service is a casual style worship service, with singing and praying together. For our “sermons” this fall we will be watching and discussing the Faith Lessons, from Biblical Archeologist and teacher, Ray Vander Laan.   These messages, filmed in the holy land, bring out the connection between the geography and history of the land with the holy scriptures.  All ages are welcome.

Pastor’s Evening Bible Study
The evening bible study led by Pastor John begins again at 6 p.m. Thursday night, August 7th. The class is simultaneously in-person and via zoom—in other words, you can join us in the Conference Room or via the internet. We are currently working through the gospel of Matthew, and on 8/7 we will be studying Matthew 25. This is the chapter where Jesus shares his final 3 parables of the gospel. All are welcome. If you need the ZOOM link, just email the office.
Make plans to attend the August 10, 10 a.m. Combined Worship Service & Fellowship Lunch. We are working hard to make this a very special Sunday. The Worship Service will be in the Crossroads Connection Center, with the famous local duo of Al McCall & Mark Wallace sharing their gospel music! Our Guest Preacher will be Rev. Bob Beckwith, the Director of the UGA Wesley Foundation. And following the worship service, we move over to the Fellowship Hall for a wonderful summer meal together! The menu will feature Poss’s like BBQ, with the congregation invited to bring side salads and vegetables. Bring a guest! It will be a wonderful Sunday morning!
Sermon Topics
Do you have a question about Christianity or the Bible? Is there something you have always wondered about, and you would like to hear addressed in a sermon? If so, email your question to the Pastor at john@elbertonfmc.com.

Sunday School Classes
A great way to go deeper in your faith is to participate in a Sunday School Class! This summer we have available a children’s class and three adult classes. The Mary Freeman Class and Cross Talk both use the Wesley Adult Bible Series. The Standing Stones Class meets upstairs and is continuing to work through CS Lewis’ book, The Screwtape Letters. Middle & High School kids interested in Sunday School, jump in with the adults this summer! Classes meet from 10:00 - 10:45 a.m.

“Let the Whole World Sing”
Anyone interested in participating in the Christmas Cantata is invited to attend the kickoff on August 9th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of First Baptist Church.
